Lassa Fever : 10 States affected and 40 Deaths Reported in Nigeria


Cases of Lassa fever has been reported in 10 States in Nigeria. According to the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, who  revealed that over 40 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak of the deadly viral disease, Lassa Fever in Nigeria.
He said this at press conference in Abuja today, Ademola said the viral disease which is spread by infected rodents, has spread to ten states in the last six weeks when the first case was reported in November.

NASRDA Announces Occurence of Lunar Eclipse




The National Space Research and Development Agency NASRDA, says Nigeria will experience a Lunar Eclipse on Sept. 28th. Lunar eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when the earth comes in-between the sun and the moon, and the earth casts its shadow on the moon, so that the moon appears reddish.
A statement by the agency which was signed and released yesterday September 9th by the Deputy Director. Media and Corporate Communications, Felix Ale, says the lunar eclipse would begin on Monday September 28th from 1:11am, and will be at its maximum by 3:47 am, with its final contact at 6:22am.

ABUJA, Lagos, Ilorin, Kaduna and some states in the northern and western part of Nigeria have been revealed to also partake also. It is revealed that it will be a partial eclipse of the sun and not full.

Nigeria: 90 LGAs are Liable to Floods in 2013 - NEMA


The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has identified 90 local government areas which are likely to be affected by floods in 2013.

The agency's Press Officer, Manzo Ezekiel, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja.
He said that the agency carried out a vulnerability study and identified 90 local government areas in states named by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) Rainfall prediction 2013 to be affected by flooding.

Mr. Ezekiel said that the vulnerability study was done through NEMA's Geographical Information System.
He said that NEMA, in a partnership with a non-governmental organisation on disaster awareness creation at the grassroots, had commenced sensitisation exercise on early warnings and prevention in the affected areas.

He said that disaster awareness was also being carried out by the agency's six zonal offices in areas that were likely be affected by the floods.
Some of the states, mostly to be affected according to the NIMET prediction are Cross River, Ogun, Kogi, Oyo, Imo, Plateau, Kaduna, Bayelsa and Lagos States.

Satellites will brighten Nigeria’s future

 
 
Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State has said the launch of satellites into space by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) would brighten the future of the country and boost its revenue base.
Wada, who disclosed this on Monday when he paid a visit to the space agency in Abuja, said space technology is the way to grow the economy.
The governor said his state would collaborate with NASRDA in the area of Geographic Information System to help in tax collection and land mapping. He urged the agency to help set up space technology courses in the state owned tertiary institutions. Earlier in his presentation, the Director General of NASRDA Dr Seidu Mohammed said satellite would be launched on Nigerian ground in 2030.
